- Captured and burned Atlanta
- Marched through Georgia, SC, & NC
- Burned everywhere he went
- Wanted to break morale of the South
McClellan:
- Major General of Ohio volunteers and commander of Ohio's forces
- Major General in Regular Army
- Command of Department of Ohio
- His troops cleared western Virginia of Confederates
- Became General In Chief of all Federal Armies in November, 1861
- Stirred up Radical Republicans
- Had growing opposition to Lincoln and his administration due to refusing attacks, demanding larger armies, and consorting with Democratic politicians and opposing the freedom of slaves
- Meet defeat at Bull Run
Confederate Leaders
Jeff Davis:
- Former Secretary of War and Missouri Senator
- President of Confederacy
- Quarrelsome; ill liked by his Congress
- Unable to cause States to give up rights to win the War
Robert E. Lee:
- Captain after Mexican War
- Moderate on secession
- Won many battles with his Army of Northern Virginia
- Military downfall came at Battle of Gettysburg
- Lee signed a surrender to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865
- President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia
Stonewall Jackson:
- Extremely religious, but bloodthirsty for battle
- Highly disciplined
- Lee's most trusted lieutenant
- Served in artillery during Mexican War
- Resigned his commission in 1851 from Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania to teach at Virginia Military Institute
- Ordered to Richmond at outbreak of Civil War
- Promoted to Major General after Manassas
- Had victories at Fort Royal, Winchester, Cross Keys, and Port Republic
J.E.B. Stuart:
- Stuart was McClellan's right hand man
- In charge of Virginia Calvary Brigade
- Major General famous for gallantry and valor
- His willingness to fight too often against the odds lead to his death
